Jeff Hardin

April 24, 2009

Jeff Hardin, 60, a former Millis selectman who served as president of the Massachusetts Selectmen’s Association, died on April 17 after a long battle with cancer.

Hardin served six years on the Millis Board of Selectmen, beginning in 2001. He was MSA secretary in 2004, MSA second vice president in 2005, and MSA first vice president in 2006. Late that year he became the group’s president, but had to step down from the position after losing his re-election bid in Millis in May 2007. Jeff was also a member of the Millis Historical Commission and founding member of the Niagara Restoration Committee.

He also served on the MMA Board of Directors.

“Jeff contributed an incredible amount of his time and his efforts to public service,” said Needham Selectman Gerry Wasserman, who succeeded Hardin as MSA presdient. “He not only served as a Millis Selectmen and MSA president, but sat on quite a few other boards and worked for many causes, everything from historic preservation to volunteer ship-building. He will be missed by a lot of people.”

Jeff played an instrumental role in saving the Niagara Fire House from the “wrecking ball”.  Beginning with the restoration of the hand painted murals in the upstairs “Niagara Hall” the building is in the process of complete restoration and will be incorporated into the site of the new Millis Public Library.

Donations in Hardin’s memory may be made to the Millis Historical Society’s Niagara Fund, PO Box 155, Millis, MA 02054.
